The first official Academy Awards was held on May 16, 1929 to honor industry achievements with Wings taking Outstanding Picture. So where did the name “Oscar” come from? Rumor has it, the golden statue earned the famous nickname in 1931 when Margaret Herrick said the statue looked like her Uncle Oscar.
