With the summer months, there is nothing more fun the spending a night under the stars, wandering some scenic trails, and taking in the beauty of nature. For many, the idea of getting away from it all is appealing, but don’t forget the natural wonders in your own back yard. Antelope Island is a great place to explore with the family and with all sorts of events and activities going on you are sure to find something everyone will enjoy.
First discovered in 1845, Antelope Island was used primarily as homestead and ranch until 1981 when it was purchased by the State of Utah and turned into a State Park. Since then Antelope Island has become a popular tourist destination featuring an abundant wildlife population including: bison, bighorn sheep, pronghorn, mule deer, coyotes, bobcats, upland game birds, and waterfowl.
In 2010, Antelope Island was the 5th most visited State Park in Utah. Some of the most popular activities on the island are bird watching, hiking, cycling, camping, horseback riding, and photography (to name just a few). Be sure to also check out the balloon and kite festival which will take place over the Labor Day weekend.
