History of Ogden

Last weekend I attended Ogden’s farmer’s market and absolutely loved spending time in one of my favorite cities. As I walked down historic 25th street, I couldn't help but think how much Ogden has changed since it was first founded in 1845.

Needless to say I wasn't around when it was first established, but I found myself visualizing what it must of been like to be some of the first settlers here. What was Ogden like before it became the Ogden we know today? How did Ogden become one of the most diverse and booming cities in Utah?

That second question is easy to answer. Simply put, it was the railroad. With the expansion of the railroad into Ogden in 1870, the city became the crossroads of the inter-mountain west and soon became known to many as Junction City making Ogden the heart of northern Utah. Ogden saw huge growth with the railroad and opened it up to government establishments during World War II, such as: the Army’s Ogden Defense Depot, Clearfield Naval Supply Center, and Hill Air Force Base. Today, Ogden is the center of the Aerospace industry with Hill and Thiokol two of its major employers.

Of course there is so much more than just the government attributes that makes Ogden a great city to live in. Utah has become famous for having “the greatest snow on earth” and Ogden is minutes away from some of the best ski resorts: Snowbasin, Powder Mountain, and Wolf Mountain among many other wonderful outdoor recreation areas. Ogden also has some rich history in the arts offering stunning performances at Peery's Egyptian Theater, the Eccles Art Center, and the Ogden Symphony Ballet and I’m only touching the surface of what Ogden provides!
